Micro-Doses of BOTOX® Provide Up-Close Improvement of Facial Skin

The injectable BOTOX® is a popular cosmetic treatment to eliminate facial lines and wrinkles caused by the muscle movements of facial expressions. It has been a safe, effective option that dermatologists and plastic surgeons have used for decades, making it the most tested cosmetic enhancement in aesthetic medicine. Because it has been in use for so long, medical providers have had the chance to explore alternative approaches to increase effectiveness while decreasing risks. These advanced techniques include micro-doses, or more diluted preparations.
Microbotulinum Technique
Now under development is an innovative, less-invasive technique known as Microbotulinum. This method entails using smaller doses of the botulinum toxin injected into a grid pattern just below the skin surface. Preliminary tests indicate this micro-dose process provides an improvement in skin texture and higher patient satisfaction.
BOTOX® is the most used cosmetic procedure worldwide, with over 7.5 million injections in patients in the United States last year. In the traditional technique, an injector performs a few injections to treat expression lines and wrinkles caused by smiling, frowning, and squinting. Forehead creases, frown lines, and crow’s feet fall into this category.
This new, less-invasive procedure uses a series of tiny injections of botulinum toxin A. Once injected just below the skin surface in a one-centimeter grid pattern between the forehead, the cheek, and the jawline, tests indicate skin texture improvement.
How Does Microbotulinum Work?
This new BOTOX® technique targets the underlying muscles’ superficial fibers. It weakens their insertion into underlying layers of skin tissue that cause facial lines and wrinkles at the face and neck. Researchers employed a high-resolution skin scanner to provide objective statistics on how this treatment performs in skin improvement. Using a 10-point grading system (with 0 being best and 10 being worst), average skin texture showed an improvement from 6.0 to 4.0. This combined with scores for micro-roughness improving from 7.5 to 5.0. There was also a significant reduction in enlarged pore size.
Passing the Test
These results were backed up by subjective ratios that show 95 percent of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with their treatment results. As with all botulinum toxin treatments, the benefits are temporary, lasting about four months. Additional treatments can be performed to continue its effectiveness.
These improvements seem to be the best in middle-aged patients. We at Aria DermSpa believe it is most appropriate for patients who range from their mid-30s to early fifties.
