Be Kind to Your Skin This Winter, and Protect It This Holiday Season
It’s been a tough year so far with social distancing and staying home more often than going out. Wearing masks and staying indoors may have had a negative impact on your skin health. And now the Connecticut winter is upon us, with blustering, cold conditions outside. The lower temperatures can leave your skin irritated, while indoor heaters can zap the moisture out of the air and your skin.
Now more than ever, you need a plan for optimal skincare. Although we offer a wide range of cosmetic treatments designed to make your skin glow, here are some things you might try on your own.
Invest in a Humidifier
Using a home humidifier will add moisture to the dry winter air. It will also help keep your skin hydrated. Run a humidifier in rooms you spend your most time in, including your office at work.
Lower Shower Temperature and Limit Time
We all love long hot showers, especially when it’s cold outside. But your skin would be better served if you took a five to ten-minute lukewarm shower or bath. Also, keep those hands looking young by washing with cold water. If the water turns your skin red or pink, it’s too hot.
Use Fragrance-Free Cleansers
When choosing soaps or cleansers, including moisturizers or gels, pick one that doesn’t include a fragrance. And don’t fall for the term unscented; they usually have some type of added scent. You can also limit your lathering while bathing to the most critical areas like feet, hands, and armpits.
Don’t Forget the Sunscreen
We know UV rays reflect on white surfaces, including snow. But the danger doesn’t diminish even when the sun is low and it’s grey. No matter the weather, lather up with sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day.
Eat Right and Hydrate
Good healthy food and plenty of water will go a long way toward maintaining your skin health. So, eat healthily and drink plenty of water. Also, taking supplements that contain omega-3 fatty acids, like flaxseed or fish oil, is wise.
Change Out of Wet Clothes Quickly
Wearing wet shoes and clothing can irritate your skin and cause it to itch. If any of your clothing gets wet this winter, including your socks or gloves, remove quickly. If your skin gets dry and irritated as a result, try a one percent hydrocortisone cream. You might want to get a medical-grade moisturizer this winter, just in case.
