BOTOX® vs. Dermal Fillers: Which is Right for You?

When it comes to rejuvenating your appearance, innovations in modern cosmetic care have made it
easy for men and women to look younger and feel more confident without having to turn to cosmetic
surgery. Of the available non-surgical options, BOTOX® and dermal fillers remain among the most popular
solutions and have helped countless patients recreate their more useful appearance.
However, choosing the right solution can be a challenge. If you’re weighing your options between BOTOX®
and dermal injectables, here’s what you need to know.

What’s the difference?

While BOTOX® and dermal fillers both aim to help patients look younger, each offer very different methods
to address the signs of aging.

As a neurotoxin-based treatment, BOTOX® is uniquely able to block nerve receptors in targeted muscles.
This allows the treatment to temporarily stop wrinkles from developing and deepening, ultimately
smoothing out these unwanted lines. In contrast, dermal fillers use injected gel-like substance to create
volume in areas where slowing collagen production and damage has diminished an individual’s full,
youthful appearance. This volume-enhancing injection can be made from a variety of substances,
although some of the more popular and best known options are developed from hyaluronic acid – a
naturally occurring substance in skin.

The difference in formula also translates into a difference in results. Whereas BOTOX® looks to smooth
wrinkles and fine lines by restricting muscle movement, dermal fillers add volume to sinking facial
features.

If you have…

Aging affects each individual differently. While some may see fine lines and wrinkles are causing them to look older than their years, others may see aging as sagging cheeks and thinning lips. During your consultation, Madison, CT dermatologist will evaluate your appearance to identify how aging is affecting your appearance and will then make a recommendation for the right cosmetic treatment. Which treatment you’ll be recommended depends on your primary concern.

Diminishing facial volume

Diminishing collagen production is a natural part of getting older but can significantly transform an individual’s appearance. Areas like the lips and cheeks are especially vulnerable to this common sign of aging. For these patients, dermal fillers can be an effective treatment solution by adding much needed volume without appearing cartoonish. Over the years, many of the leading brands like Juvéderm® and Restylane® have developed a full suite of dermal filler options, each tailored to meet the varying needs of different facial features. As a result, patients also have more choice in their desired formula and application options.

Crows’ feet or lines between the eyebrows

While wrinkles may start out barely perceptible, they can quickly deepen to become a dominating facial feature. Common ones like crows’ feet and “elevens” (lines between the eyebrows) typically develop as a result of continued muscle movement, which combined with diminishing collagen production causes these lines to deepen into creases.

In these instances, temporarily freezing muscle movement with BOTOX® is the best way to prevent these wrinkles from worsening. As the injections last anywhere from three to six months, the results are not permanent, allowing patients to gradually adjust injections sites in a way that slows wrinkle development without risking the frozen appearance.

Combination of Wrinkles and Thinning Facial Features

For some, the signs of aging can appear almost simultaneously. For these individuals, it can be almost impossible to prioritize one concern over another. At Aria DermSpa, our experienced dermatologist may recommend combination treatment for a fully rejuvenated yet natural looking appearance. In this scenario, wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movement may be initially treated with BOTOX® or a similar neurotoxin treatment. Follow-up treatment with dermal fillers is then completed to add volume to areas like the cheeks, below the eyes and the lips.

BOTOX® or Fillers? Why Not All Injectables Are the Same

If you’re interested in addressing signs of aging such as expression lines, loss of volume in the cheeks or lips, or smoothing out wrinkles, it’s likely you’ve considered BOTOX® or dermal fillers such as Juvéderm® or Radiesse®. While both BOTOX® and dermal fillers can be injected in your dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s offices, are non-invasive, and require little if any recovery time, they are quite different. Here is what you need to know about the difference between the two treatments so you can decide which is better for your unique needs

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX®, a purified form of the botulinum toxin obtained from bacteria, has been safely used for decades to correct wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements such as smiling, frowning, or furrowing the eyebrows. This injectable works by blocking nerve signals in muscles it is injected into, temporarily paralyzing them. When done correctly, BOTOX® does not cause the dreaded ‘frozen face’ that some have come to associate with it and instead results in a smoother, more youthful appearance.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to add volume and fullness to areas that have lost volume due to genetics, aging, or extreme weight loss. Dermal fillers can be made of a number of different substances, but the most popular and effective usually make use of hyaluronic acid, which draws in moistures and adds plumpness to the skin. Dermal fillers are most often injected into the cheek or jaw area or into the lips to add or restore volume. While they can smooth out fine lines and wrinkles due to their plumping nature, they do not work on the muscles to prevent the expressions that form these wrinkles.

How are BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers Different?

Both BOTOX® and dermal fillers are temporary, safe, and non-invasive methods of providing patients with a younger, more vibrant appearance. While the effects of BOTOX® gradually wear off, the substances used in dermal fillers are safely absorbed by the body over time. There is no downtime with either type of injectable and recovery usually involves only minor swelling or irritation at the injection sites. Most patients who get BOTOX® or dermal fillers are in and out of the office within an hour or two and experience no disruption of their normal schedules.

Both treatments can help patients achieve a younger, more rested appearance, but they do so in different ways. While BOTOX® works primarily by freezing muscle movements that lead to fine lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers are meant to fill in areas that have lost volume or fullness. BOTOX® is most often used between the eyebrows, around the mouth, and around the eyes. Dermal fillers are usually used in the lips, cheeks, and around the mouth area.

The amount of time that BOTOX® and dermal fillers last also differs. While BOTOX® injections may need to be performed every three or four months to maintain results, some fillers can last two years or longer.

How Can You Choose Between BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers?

Whether you choose a BOTOX® or dermal filler treatment depends primarily on your areas of concern and the results you want from your treatment. If the main areas you want to treat are caused by repeated facial expressions and you do not have loss of volume, BOTOX® is probably the right option. However, if you feel your lips have thinned, there are hollows in your cheeks or under your eyes, or that your face has lost some of its contour, a dermal filler is likely the right choice. In many cases, combining BOTOX® with a dermal filler can provide comprehensive results that patients love. These can be used together in what is often referred to as a ‘liquid facelift’ and is appropriate for those who want to address several signs of aging at one time.

Scheduling a Consultation with a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon

The best way to determine if BOTOX®, dermal fillers, or both are right for you is to schedule a consultation with the knowledgeable staff at Aria Dermatology and Aesthetic Center. During your consultation, a team member will be able to examine your skin, find out what results you hope for, and further explain the differences between the injectables they offer. This will help you make the right decision that will produce results you will love! Beat Dry Winter Lips with HA Fillers

Winter weather can be harsh on your skin. Although many patients know to revisit their daily skin care routine as the seasons change, few know about the importance of winter lip care. Neglecting this sensitive area of your skin can lead to unpleasant and painfully chapped lips. Instead of overapplying lip balm, which can further exacerbate your symptoms, hyaluronic acid fillers may be a better answer

What Causes Chapped Lips?

Chapped or cracked lips in the winter can be attributed to several key factors like changes in the weather and the environment. While summer weather may be warm and humid, winter weather is a stark contrast. Low to no moisture in the air, combined with the harsh effects of the sun and other environmental factors can have an intense drying effect on your lips. While the skin on the rest of your body can respond by increasing oil production, your lips don’t have oil glands, meaning they will dry out faster. Indoors, steady heater use without a humidifier can have a similar effect on your lips, leaving them vulnerable to chapping and cracking.

In addition to environmental damage, our behavior can also contribute to dry lips. Drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy diet that isn’t high in salt can be difficult around the winter months when hot beverages and heavy comfort food become dietary staples. As a result, not drinking enough water and adopting a salt-heavy diet can also contribute to developing dry, chapped lips.

Treating Chapped Lips with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Most patients are familiar with hyaluronic acid fillers as the secret to smoother skin and fuller lips. However, the same ingredient that causes the plumping and smoothing effect of fillers on the skin is also responsible for making them effective treatments for dry, chapped lips.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that helps skin cells retain moisture. Over time, environmental factors and the aging process can outpace hyaluronic acid production, accelerating the development of fine lines and wrinkles. When used to treat these cosmetic flaws, hyaluronic acid fillers help add volume to the treatment area by helping skin cells retain water. Combined with collagen production stimulation, patients are left with naturally full looking skin that is conveniently well hydrated.

Using hyaluronic acid for chapped lips has several important advantages. First, the injectable helps especially vulnerable cells stay moisturized despite changes in weather and other factors. Secondly, the temporary results make it an attractive option that doesn’t require frequent touch-ups. Most hyaluronic fillers last about six months and gradually dissipate into the skin, making it a discreet option for patients who aren’t looking to enhance their pout year-round. Finally, the minimal treatment time and ease of application make dermal fillers an excellent option for busy patients who don’t have the time to spend constantly monitoring their lips for the slightest chap or crack. Dermal fillers allow patients to complete treatment and get back to their schedule without interruption or retreatment until the spring.

The Truth About Lip Injections: Dermal Fillers at Aria DermSpa Dermatology & Aesthetic Center in Madison, CT

There are a lot of misconceptions out there, many perpetuated by keeping up with a certain high-profile family, that may scare you away from ever trying them yourself. But have no fear; the team at Aria DermSpa is here to clear up the fog.

“I’d always wanted slightly fuller lips—there’s nothing wrong with the ones I was born with, but my top lip is pretty thin and almost disappears when I smile,” writes Cosmopolitan contributor Ali Drucker in a recent exposé on lip fillers. Hers is a sentiment we hear shared by women almost every day, those who feel their lips are a little too thin, and have always wondered what it would be like to get a little bump in their plump. No, you won’t look like Kylie Jenner, instead you’ll see a subtle, beautiful improvement in the overall fullness of your lips.

At Aria, we carry a few different options for treating the lips, including Juvéderm® and Restylane®, two of the most popular lip enhancers available today. Our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Lisa Donofrio, is world-renowned for her expertise in injectable treatments and has even been named the “Best Physician for Injectables” by New York Times Magazine. During your consultation she will walk you through your options and recommend which treatment might be best for you based on your aesthetic goals.

Voluminous Beauty: Facial Fat Transfer in Madison, CT

Do you feel like your face has lost some of its youthful volume? As we get older, our faces can begin to look “hollow”, especially under our eyes and in our cheeks. Typically, this hollowness gives way to deep wrinkles and unwanted facial folds—symptoms of the aging process that can be immensely frustrating!

To combat these effects of aging, Aria DermSpa performs facial fat transfer procedures from the comfort of our Madison office. The process involves refreshing your facial contours by collecting a small amount of fat from one part of the body and injecting it into the desired facial location. It replenishes your “hollow” areas and dramatically reduces the appearance of wrinkles and folds using only your own natural body fat. There’s no need for outside chemicals or substances for you to achieve a taut and voluminous look!

Results from facial fat transfer procedures are known to last much longer than dermal filler treatments, and patients are usually completely healed after about a week. A series of treatments are recommended for optimal results.

Here at Aria DermSpa, we pride ourselves on helping women of the greater New Haven area rejuvenate their appearance and regain confidence in their day to day lives. Call us today at 203.421.6674 to learn more about facial fat transfer, or to schedule a consultation.
